A VERGER is a lay assistant to the clergy, responsible for the physical aspects of the service. The verger helps in the planning and preparation for the various services and liturgies and, therefore, must be knowledgeable about the liturgy and familiar with church operations. Before each service the verger checks to see that everything and everyone is in place. During the service, the verger helps to assure that the service flows smoothly, guides the acolytes and lay Eucharistic ministers, and carries out any requests of the clergy.
Vergers serve at weddings, funerals and other special services as well as at the Sunday Eucharist services. In addition vergers also do the rector's bidding outside of the services. The head verger coordinates verger activities and maintains the written guides that define how each type of service is carried out.
Vergers are chosen by the rector and serve at her discretion. Theirs is a long-term commitment. Epiphany's present vergers are Marjorie Lacy (Head Verger), Donna Baird, Allan Budd, and Jeanne Lundin. Student vergers are Will Hays and Anna Lacey. Norm Lundin will begin his verger training this fall.
